CBHDS Presents at Translational Science 2025 Annual Meeting

Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science (CBHDS) Director Alexandra Hanlon and Assistant Director Alicia Lozano presented during Translational Science 2025 in Washington D.C., April 15-17, 2025. Notably, Alexandra Hanlon received the Mentoring JEDI award at the Justice, Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (JEDI) SIG Meeting on Monday, April 14.

“Advancing Equity: Innovative Education and Training Practices for Inclusive Health Data Science,” a multi-institutional panel including Dr. Hanlon, Felicity Enders, Jodi Lapidus, and Jareen Meinzen-Derr, focused on advancing data and health equity as well as workforce diversity through innovative educational programs and outreach initiatives. The overarching theme of data equity was discussed, including the BERD Data Equity Seminar Series (an interdisciplinary graduate course), a training program designed for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) statisticians, which incorporates data equity into an Applied Biostatistics and Data Science curriculum, and CBHDS's CUBE, an immersive undergraduate internship for underrepresented students in STEM.
The session was intended for those with an interest in being part of the data science community, including clinicians, methodologists, educators, and program developers who are actively engaged in promoting equity through their teaching and research efforts, as well as for those new to the field who are seeking guidance on integrating the principles discussed into their work. By the conclusion of the session, participants gained actionable insights into how to infuse principles of equity into curricula and training programs, ultimately providing the next generation of translational scientists with effective tools to address inequities.
