Tanner B. Barbour, BS is a Data Scientist for the Center for Biostatistics and Health Data Science. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Human Nutrition, Foods, and Exercise (HNFE) from Virginia Tech in May 2023. Tanner began as a volunteer at CBHDS in 2022 and completed an independent study in which he built an encoder-decoder model architecture that utilized discharge summaries from the electronic health record to make DRG code predictions. Upon graduation, he began his position as a Data Scientist, where he assists with tasks related to study design, data management, statistical analysis, manuscript preparation, randomization scheme generation, and clinical study reporting.
Tanner has contributed his data science expertise to fields such as addiction recovery, behavioral economics, bioinformatics, exercise physiology, health inequity, mental health care, and predictive analytics. He has performed data management via Amazon Web Services, developed surveys in REDCap, and performed data analysis utilizing Python, R, and SAS. Additionally, he has co-authored published research and is a co-author on several research publications currently under review.
